Bestill My Beating Heart...

The Ballyhoo has been “hearted” by the amazing, death-defying talents of krisztina maros at sketch pause.

Here are my 7 blogs that may change your life in no particular order

1. Barbara Johansen Newman’s always feisty blog – Cats and Jammers Studio

2. Author and blogger extrordinaire Cynthia Leitich Smith whose recent vampire book, Tantalize and spooky blog will leave your hair permanently standing on air.

3. Linda Silvestri whose blog has received countless blogging awards and still deserves 10 more for making me laugh on a regular basis.

4 & 5. Kathy Weller and Monica Lee for making me want to tap into to my innocent, whimsical and far less darker, vodka-drinking child.

6. The World Famous Circus Star, Adam Rex whose work makes me as giddy as school girl with a Jonas Brothers crush.

7. And last but not least....the best kept secret in blogging history is Don's American miniature portrait blog and European Miniature Portrait Blog whose postings are a treasure trove for any illustrator or writer researching historical hairstyles and costumes.
The rules for this award-takeaway are:
1. The winner can put the logo on their blog
2. Link the person you received your award from
3. Nominate at least 7 other blogs
4. Put links of those blogs on yours
5. Leave a message on the nominee's blog letting them know about their award

Wow... those portrait blogs are PHENOMENAL. It really pays to be a blog spy.

So I was on Picture Book Junkies and reading your interview because I pretty much love your stuff. I'm a writer/illustrator and I had a question if you had a spare moment. You said not to finish up a book dummy so it can be art directed in different directions. I can see how that makes sense... I'm just wondering how you would physically present that?

Anyway.. I suppose that's a long question for a blog... But thanks in advance.

Hi Meridth, nice to meet you. I love your blog! (I have a fondness for old ladies who eat naughty children too).

To answer your question, when you are initially selling a proposal, I personally don't feel a whole 32+ page sketched out dummy is necessary. Art Directors and Editors are very visual people so they will get a good sense of your style from one strong finished spread and a couple of character sketches.

I feel that going straight to a finished dummy skips some necessary steps - showing thumbnails, talking about the emotions and actions of the story, developing the characters, best page breaks etc.

Does that answer your question?

Sure does. Thanks o' wise and bearded one. That was really helpful.

Nice to meet you and thanks for the inspiration!

Carlyn, I can't believe I am just seeing this now. I am SO flattered! Thank you thank you for giving me this award!! I am so glad my work inspires you in some way. Your work does the same for me as you know, I am a big fan of your work. I don't think it is too late for me to reciprocate now with my own blog posting and list of 7 blogs. It's only, what, 3 months? That's ok!! :)
Thanks again!!

Nice post. I learn something more challenging on different blogs everyday. It will always be stimulating to read content from other writers and practice a little something from their store. I’d prefer to use some with the content on my blog whether you don’t mind. Natually I’ll give you a link on your web blog. Thanks for sharing.
